Ruthie learned to paint from her father, Glenn E. Messer, a professional artist. Together, they participated and sold their paintings in more than 75 art fairs and exhibitions throughout the city and were members of the Greater Kansas City Art Association.

She attended Northwest Missouri State University where an Art major expanded her knowledge of art history, and furthered her skills in calligraphy and design. A 35-year career in the travel industry gave her the opportunity to travel the world. Her travels gave her a deep appreciation for fine art. She continues to be inspired by the many art galleries she was able to tour in her travels and the photographs that she took of cities, beaches and landscapes all over the world.
